Our yarn is spun by a family-operated woolen mill in Prince Edward Island, where they do not use carbonizing to clean their fleeces, which means that the lanolins is not stripped from the final product. You can learn more about why I think that’s important here.
The result is a super-durable, heavy-weight, dense, yet pliable yarn that knits (and re-knits…and re-knits) beautifully, doesn’t become brittle over time, and doesn’t feel itchy on your skin. It is terrific for knitting garments that need to withstand the elements, as the lanolin is naturally water resistant. This yarn is especially well suited for traditional fishermen’s sweaters and fair isle knits (the kind worn outdoors, meant to withstand rain, wind, and snow). A wonderful all-purpose yarn, it is 2 ply worsted weight, and knits up at 4.5 stitches to the inch on size 7 needles. We recommend sizes 5- 7 needles for sweaters, size 3 needles for socks. 4 ounce skeins, approx. 220 yards. Items knit using this process can be machine washed and dried flat. They will become softer with each successive laundering.
