Down at the farm yesterday, for a sausage-making frenzy: Sweet Italian, Sicilian Parmesan, Cajun Andouille, Tuscan Sundried Tomato, New England Farmhouse Apple, and fresh Brats…We work all day, then come home to this:
Yup. Bear attack number two. Yes, we knew the bear would likely return, which is way we moved two thirds of our hives down to the farm. But we decided to try an experiment: keep two hives in place (I want the pollinators near where I’ve got the fruit growing), put up a second line of fencing, and get a dog from some friends of ours who has a reputation for an annoying and persistently loud bark.
Love the dog, but he prefers to sleep under my side of the bed. And while there are dust bunnies, there are no bears under the bed.
Honestly, some days, it feels like we have to fight for every little bit of ground we can gain…and we still don’t get anywhere. It’s a good thing we still like the work.

You need to get serious about livestock guardian dogs…learn about the layers of protection.. Great Pyrenees, Maremmas, and Anatolians etc..
I would not mess around with a bear for too long …

Damn, damn damn. SO sorry to see this. Ditto on bringing Big Nasty Woofs out to your place. Hope the bear gets anaphylactic shock, the b(e)a(r)stard.

Shannon, When we were in the ADKs we used a horn that was wired to an electric fence to protect the bees. When the bears made a move the horn would sound and the bears would skedaddle. Sorry about the hassle and glad that the sausage is underway. We’ll need a restock soon!
