Golly. It sure is nice to post a little something on a blog and get such a deluge of information. Here’s what I can share from yesterday, based on blog posts, FB comments and correspondence I received on the post:
1. The role of coconut oil in the toothpaste is anti-bacterial.
2. Be leary of using hydrogen peroxide in the paste, as it can play a role in long term soft tissue damage (thanks to my childhood dentist for chiming in on that one!)
3. The problem with glycerin is that it is believed to coat the teeth, and prevent them from re-mineralizing. I don’t have hard-and-fast data on that, but I’m game for entertaining the idea. Thanks, everyone, for sharing your insights on this one!

In the meantime, we’ll use up this batch, then switch to a hydrogren peroxide-free version (most likely the same recipe, with the one ingredient eliminated…unless some of you have something better to share??). And it would appear from the lovely label on the jar that “absolutely,” “toothpaste,” and “homemade” will be spelling words for next week…

April 11, 2013 8:13 AM EDTWell, I’ve been looking into this quite a lot lately. Here’s my newly revamped toothpaste recipe after about a week research. Do with it what you will. bentonite clay (4tbsp), aluminum free baking soda (3tbsp), high quality sea salt (1-2tbsp), cinnamon (1tbsp), calcium/magnesium powder (2tbsp), optional mint powder (I make my own from herbs in my garden) it’s a dry mixture. I keep it in a small jar with a lid and I make one jar per person so that we can dip our brushes in the jar with out offending others’ sensibilities. after brushing I do oil pulling with coconut oil to whiten my teeth but also to get rid of bacteria etc– cyndi

April 11, 2013 1:50 PM EDTI didn’t know that about the hydrogen peroxide. I made up my first batch ever yesterday from your recipe and will try it without the peroxide next time. Thanks for the post!– Laura

I hadn’t been to the dentist in about 10 years and had been using my own toothpowder for at least half that time maybe longer and the dentist & hygenist were pleasantly surprised at the health & cleanliness of my teeth when I finally went in (got a groupon discount!) I also bought a scraper tool in the dental aisle at wal-mart & scrape my own plaque when I notice it starting to form. They laughed that I was doing their job for them and doing it well 😉
Xylitol is another great thing to add to your toothpaste or powder. It helps teeth remineralize!! And the sweet is kinda nice too 😉 I add different essential oils to mine for flavor as well Orange & peppermint is a fun combo. I also use Thieves or On Guard from Young Living & doTerra, respectively as they’re super germ killers & add a great flavor.
