He doesn’t take his granddaughters to Disney, he doesn’t take them fishing. He doesn’t buy them baubles. But every afternoon and every morning he goes to the barn with them and stands patiently as they learn to work with their livestock. He shows them when to be firm, he makes sure there is time for love and cuddles with all critters. There are tough moments, too, where they grapple with livestock injuries, pain, and processing. And he stays with them through that, as well. He lets them experience a life where pleasure is not separated from pain, where labor is not separated from play, where joy is not separated from sorrow.
